Variations vs. errors
A variation is an intentional (or at least accepted) difference within a casting’s production run — a different color, wheel type, base material, or tampo (the printed graphics). An error is an unintended factory mistake — wrong wheels, a missing or misplaced tampo, an unintended color. Both can carry premiums; the key is telling them apart from post-production damage or a custom.
The common types of variation
- Color variations — the same car in a color that ran briefly or in small numbers.
- Wheel variations — different wheel types used across a production run.
- Tampo variations — changes or absences in the printed graphics.
- Base variations — metal vs. plastic bases, or different base markings and countries.
Factory errors collectors prize
- Wrong wheels (mismatched or incorrect type).
- Missing tampo (a car that should have graphics but doesn’t), or a misaligned or doubled tampo.
- Unintended colors or unpainted areas.
- Assembly errors, like a body on the wrong base.
Telling a real error from a fake
Because errors carry premiums, some are faked — wheels swapped, tampos removed, or cars “restored” and sold as factory oddities. A genuine factory error looks factory-made: consistent, not tampered. Compare against the standard version, look for signs of disassembly or aftermarket work, and for valuable claims, buy from sellers who guarantee authenticity.
